This delicate Memento Mori pendant features a bronze skeleton hand grasping a working hourglass* with black sand. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Memento Mori jewelry was worn as daily adornment by the more learned and affluent of the day. This jewelry was not a symbol of mourning but instead showed the wearer to be a deep thinker, openly acknowledging the fact that death comes to all. It’s presence encouraged one to live life to the fullest as it reminded the wearer that they too, must eventually die. The hourglass is often depicted as a symbol that human existence is fleeting, and that the “sands of time” will run out for every human life. Unlike other methods of measuring time, the hourglass concretely represents the present as being between the past and the future, and this has made it an enduring symbol of time itself.
